Have you heard the term ‘No pain, no gain’? Well, your mother probably didn’t tell you that because she knew better.
Pain is the body’s way of signalling that something is wrong. Working through pain continues the pain cycle rather than inhibiting it with rest. The pain cycle begins with pain and we guard, or limit, movement of the area because it hurts, which causes the muscle to spasm. Spasms decrease range of motion causing the muscle to become weak. A weak muscle does not function properly, therefore, you become frustrated.
If you are in pain, do something about it. Massage can help with muscle pain, however, if the pain is severe or accompanied by blood, swelling, redness, or heat you should consult a doctor before your massage therapist.
